SUPER FOR LIFE: AN UNFINISHED SYMPHONY

Dear Colleague

Recently, in a speech delivered to a national business convention, former Prime Minister the Hon. Paul Keating lamented that as one of the key architects of Australia’s current superannuation system he believed that our country’s superannuation framework was unfortunately an “Unfinished Symphony”.

While Mr. Keating explained in that address that the incomplete policy elements he referred to related largely to the question of adequacy, which still needs to be addressed effectively, there are a number of other “instruments” in the superannuation orchestra that equally require the collective attention of our policy makers and other stakeholders so that the “Unfinished Symphony” can be progressed.

What of the yet unresolved or sufficiently progressed issues of the low engagement in superannuation of average Australians, better and more meaningful disclosure, appropriate advice and education models and practices, further and better simplification of regulation and many other elements of the “symphony” that require attention?

At CMSF 2007, these and other issues will be explored, discussed, debated and weighed-up with a view to the Conference playing its part in seeking to have the “Unfinished Symphony” further progressed so that it is once again the Australian retirement framework “masterpiece” to which we and the World tunes-in to!
