Commissions, Advice, Payment To Advisers

The issue of Commissions is a contentious one within the superannuation industry.  How we pay advisers is constantly under debate.  Also causing difficulty for funds is the laws and regulations which prescribe how funds can communicate with members, which funds can give advice, and what can and cannot be said without tripping into dangerous territory. This session will explore these issues, from a number of different angles.

Speakers: Richard Gilbert, CEO,Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA); Alan Kohler, Journalist, Eureka Report and ABC; Jo-Anne Bloch, CEO, Financial Planning Association (FPA)

Moderator: Michael Dwyer, CEO, First State Super

Brand Marketing And Workplace Distribution in a Complex and Competitive World

Operating under the fund choice regime, a fund’s brand plays an ever-increasing role as a key competitive asset.

Successful, well conceived and effectively managed brands, can assist a fund to move from being one of a number of financial providers to a favourably considered and respected one that enjoys the confidence and support of its members and stakeholders as their preferred choice. However, to effectively move from being just another fund to being a brand, what you offer and how you package this needs to reflect your particular values and differentiated offering. These include the extra or unique functional or emotional benefits that will set you apart from the crowd of other competitors' brands.

Following his much talked about presentation last year to the Fund Executives Association 2006 Conference, CMSF has invited Associate Professor, Mark Ritson to talk branding in the superannuation environment.

Speakers: Mark Ritson, Associate Professor, Melbourne Business School; Anna Booth, Director, Co-Solve and Members Equity Bank

Chair: Samm Bell, Executive Manager, Home Loan Origination, Members Equity Bank

20/20 Vision - Look Back - Look Forward

Garry Weaven is one of the eminent strategic thinkers in the superannuation industry. He has been responsible for a great deal of the success of Industry Super Funds

At CMSF 07, he will present his thoughts on where the superannuation industry is heading; what form the competitive environment is likely to take, and what will be the key challenges facing the industry in the future.

Speaker: Garry Weaven, Chair, Industry Funds Management

Essential Social Trends For Investors

With more than two thirds of the value of the companies made up by intangibles, how can we ensure we are getting value for money?

Shortening product cycles, the war for talent, global supply chains, outsourcing, a new generation of tech-savvy and advertising resistant consumers – are we moving to an era where capital is plentiful, consumers are changing and labour is 'king'?

In addition, climate change has hit the mainstream - but how can investors ensure they are protected from the risks and benefit from the opportunities?

In this session we consider some of the important and largely under-researched social trends driving company value creation.

Speaker: Michael Anderson, Director of Sustainable Funds, AMP Capital Investors

Chair: Debora Jackson, Client Services Manager, Industry Funds Management

Economies Of Scale – Research Project

There is much discussion in the superannuation industry on the impact of Economies of Scale.  There are also many views on this topic.  So we have commissioned Rainmaker to research and investigate what quantifiable impacts fund scale has upon fund efficiency, fees, and deliverables.

Speaker: Alex Dunnin, Director of Research, Rainmaker Information

Chair: Angela Emslie, Trustee Director, HESTA, VicSuper, Vision Super, Care Super, AIST

Budget Changes And The Simplification Of Super - Is Your Fund Ready To Change Direction Yet Again?

2. BUDGET CHANGES AND ITS IMPLICATIONS & SIMPLIFICATION OF SUPER

The Government announced wholesale changes to superannuation and taxation in last year’s Budget, with the introduction of its “Simplified Superannuation” Regime. The legislation has been released in draft form, and a review of it indicates that whilst these changes will simplify very technical areas of super for members, superannuation funds have the job ahead of them to implement the changes, especially by 1 July 2007.

In this session, we are fortunate to have valuable speakers from Treasury (who helped write the legislation) and from the ATO (who will be implementing it), as well as two lawyers from the boutique superannuation law firm, TurksLegal, to untangle the super and tax web and outline what the implications will be on Fund operations, procedures and processes. It will be a practical session to help explain the wide-ranging changes and what it will mean for you and your Fund.

Panel: Jenny Willcocks, Partner, TurksLegal; Raelene Vivian, Deputy Commissioner, Superannuation, Australian Taxation Office; Trevor Thomas, Principal Advisor, Superannuation and Savings Division, Treasury
Chair: Peta-Gai McLaughlin, Legal and Compliance Manager, AIST

Location: Meeting Room 7

3. WHAT DOES INVESTING RESPONSIBLY MEAN?

It goes without saying that no one wants to invest irresponsibly. In this practical workshop you will hear about a framework that guides Funds in tackling the issue of responsible investment, the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI). In this session you will hear what the UN PRI means in practice for super trustees i.e. what they are and are not and what is involved in becoming a signatory. A broad overview will also be provided about what a range of Funds are doing and are likely to do in the future in terms of responsible investing, in particular in relation to mitigation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and how to incorporate these issues into investment decision making. Participants will also be provided with a road map of where they can get more information about alternative initiatives to invest responsibly and to mitigate ESG risks.

Speakers: Geoff Stewart, CFA, Senior Associate, Mercer Investment Consulting; Rosalind McKay, Research and Policy Officer, Australian Council Super Investors (ACSI)
Chair: Colin Tate, Managing Director, Conexus Financial

4. WHEN I WAS 25, IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR...

Marketing to members must change forever. Why? Because members say so!

Using demography to target new members and keep existing ones, just doesn’t cut it any more. Find out how to view your members differently and why members are in control of the relationship – not you.

This session is about walking in the shoes of your members to help you develop sensible marketing communications strategies both on-line and off-line.

BRAND, MARKETING AND WORKPLACE DISTRIBUTION IN A COMPLEX AND COMPETITIVE WORLD

Operating under the fund choice regime and within the brave new world of work choice, a fund’s brand plays an ever-increasing role
Successful, well conceived and effectively managed brands, can assist a fund to move from being one of a number of financial providers to a favorably considered and respected one that enjoys the confidence and support of its members and stakeholders as their preferred choice.

Will brand help funds in the brave new world of work choices? When Super Funds, particularly, Industry Super Funds and later Members Equity Bank were founded, it was on the premise that they served the needs of working people. They grew through their unrivalled access to potential members through visits to workplaces. Their premise is unchanged: however new industrial relations laws constrain workplace access.

How can funds maintain their contact with working people in the face of these new constraints?

Speakers: Mark Ritson, Associate Professor, Melbourne Business
School; Anna Booth, Director, CoSolve and Members Equity Bank
Chair: Samm Bell, Executive Manager, Home Loan Origination, Members Equity Bank

COMMISSIONS, ADVICE, PAYMENT TO ADVISORS

The issue of Commissions is a contentious one within the superannuation industry. How we pay advisors is constantly under debate. Also causing difficulty for funds is the laws and regulations which prescribe how funds can communicate with members, which funds can give advice, and what can and cannot be said without tripping into dangerous territory.
